I was looking over some photos last week and came across a picture of my cousin, who was about 6 years old at the time. He was wearing a cast up to his thigh on his left leg; the result of rigging up several structures, included if I recall correctly, a wagon, a bushel basket, and a long board on top of a mound of dirt, so he could “fly” off the top, pretending to be his favorite super hero.
His idea, although not exceptional for a 6-year-old boy, landed him in the emergency room, with a leg broken in two places.
I wasn’t immune to an idea that wasn’t so well thought out either. When I was about 7, I wanted to have a lemonade stand with a friend of mine.
Always the “step ahead” entrepreneur, I decided that to attract more people, we should offer lemonade and Popsicles for a slightly higher price!
We drew in a good crowd—but I somehow forgot that frozen Popsicles and warm weather aren’t exactly a long-term match. I did put them in a cooler... just forgot the minor detail of adding ice! Ouch!
Turns out, no one’s lining up for a lukewarm, half-melted Popsicle to go with their lemonade.
Admit it! At least once in your young life, you tried to see if you could fly, whether off the bed, steps, or a rigged-up disaster like my cousin!
When we’re young and full of hope, nothing seems to stand in the way of our dreams. But as we grow older and gain experience, we often lose that confidence.
Instead of feeling more capable, we become skeptical—quick to make excuses for why the things we once dreamed of are no longer possible.
I see this all the time with the entrepreneurs I coach.
Many sat on ideas for decades, wanting to fly but never attempting to take off.
They might have a great idea, but they are stuck on how to develop it successfully.
Or, they have tried some things, but they aren’t seeing the traction they want.
It’s often hard to be sure your idea can take wings, but there are specific strategies you can apply that give you a far better chance at truly taking off and being successful.
And those strategies can make all the difference between soaring to new heights or falling flat on your face!
