Lance Armstrong said, “ Pain is temporary, but quitting lasts forever.” While true, that comment portrays quitting as a shameful and disgusting act.
When we hear the word “quit,” we may be predisposed to think of someone losing, giving up, taking the easy way out, or even just not trying.
But, quitting is anything but cowardly many times.
Today is Quitters Day according to Social Media, whenever most people have already given up on keeping their New Year’s resolutions.
Really?
Are we a society that gives up that easily?
Is it impossible to sustain an intention to do something different for more than two weeks?
This is an area for another topic but I seriously think we should embrace Quitters Day for a different reason.
There are so many areas where we automatically enrich our lives just by being a quitter.
We can decide to quit overspending or to quit an unhealthy habit.
It is beneficial to quit participating in a relationship that is detrimental to us and even to quit a job that compromises our values.
So, why does quitting take on such a negative connotation?
Psychologists think people quit because they are weak, but the very act of quitting demands clarification.
It takes a strong person to quit subscribing to negative behavior and certainly no one weak would choose to quit a habit that requires constant monitoring and self-discipline to eliminate.
When I am coaching a client who really is at a crossroads about their business or who has lost the passion and desire to do what it takes to make the business succeed, I let them know there is no shame in quitting.
Closing a business can be a very traumatic experience but sometimes it is the wisest and most beneficial option.
I would never recommend someone continue to pour time and money into a business barely surviving, especially if they don’t have the internal motivation to do so.
But, sometimes I see struggling business owners who have already leveraged everything to save their business and continue to do so because they are embarrassed or ashamed to let their business die.
